Mexico
The Sea of Cortez, Mexico, called the 'World's Aquarium' (by Jacques Cousteau), is a must for all diving enthusiasts. As a visitor to this underwater paradise, you can expect to see some of the most impressive marine animals in the world: Hammerhead Sharks, Whale Sharks, Blue, Grey, and Orca Whales, Dolphins and Giant Pacific Manta Rays, to name but a few. Dotted with underwater mountains and canyons, the Sea of Cortez circulates huge amounts of nutrient rich water, producing heavy plankton blooms that attract in turn a massive diversity of tropical and pelagic fish to these waters.
Dive Worldwide offers the opportunity to dive with Whale Sharks from May to June, spot Blue Whales in March and April or spend time looking at Grey Whales in February. Throughout the rest of the year there is plenty to keep even the most jaded diver enthused, be it the Giant Pacific Manta Rays that appear between July and November or the ever present schools of dolphins. Such a diverse undersea world has something for everyone, from challenging wall and cave dives around Espiritu Santo Island, to checking out sunken wrecks, such as the old Salvatierra Ferry, or diving with playful Sea-lions and schools of colourful fish at Los Islotes.
Known worldwide as the 'Mexican Galapagos' Socorro Island is the kind of place where the unexpected can happen at any time. This group of volcanic islands attract large concentrations of fi sh, sharks and the biggest mantas you normally only dream of.
The Socorro islands are found approximately 240 miles south of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, making it a remote location where only long range liveaboards can go. This fact, along with the preservation efforts of the Mexican Navy base on site, makes it a dream place for divers from all over the world. The best season is November to May.
