The Sea of Cortez offers everyone incredible marine encounters throughout the year. Immerse yourself in the annual mobula ray aggregation, an experience of a lifetime.

Witness one of nature’s greatest events as thousands of munkiana mobula rays aggregate in the southern Sea of Cortez for just a few months of the year.

Your adventure begins in Cabo San Lucas, an area famed for its beaches and relaxed lifestyle. Prior to joining your liveaboard it’s possible to join a photography workshop to help hone your skills. Your liveaboard expedition sets sail to the Sea of Cortez in search of the annual aggregation of thousands of rays, accompanied by inquisitive orca, pods of dolphin and occasional sightings of other species of whale.

The trip is limited to 12 passengers offering an intimate adventure and more time for marine life encounters. The experienced crew includes a spotter plane, ensuring guests maximum time with these graceful creatures, often seen breaching as they feed in the plankton rich waters. Ocean activity during the week is by snorkelling and freediving but guests are welcome to relax on board or use the kayaks and paddle boards too.

This expedition offers unique animal encounters and an experience of a lifetime.

Suggested Itinerary

  1. Day 1: Fly to Cabo San Lucas

We recommend flying via Mexico City, but depending on your budget and flight schedules, you may need to travel via the USA. This is an overnight flight arriving in Cabo San Lucas the next day.

  2. Day 2: Day at leisure

On arrival, transfer to your hotel in Cabo San Lucas for a one night stay prior to joining your liveaboard. This afternoon we recommend visiting the dive centre to check-in and arrange your spot on the photography workshop and any other requests prior to the main liveaboard trip.

  3. Day 3: Photography workshop and embark liveaboard

This morning why not join the complimentary photography workshop provided by Backscatter at the SeeCreatures centre.

Enjoy your day at leisure before checking in and embarking on your liveaboard this evening. Dinner is served on board as you set sail for the Sea of Cortez.

  4. Days 4-9 : Mobula and orca encounters

Over the next few days, the experienced crew will introduce you to the seasonal and iconic marine life in this area of the Sea of Cortez, namely squadrons of munkiana mobula rays (also known as Munk’s devil rays) and hopefully some inquisitive pods of orca. The encounters are predominantly snorkelling and freediving activities.

Aerial support is available throughout the trip, helping to maximise encounters. Once the mobula rays have been located, guests will be transported to them on the accompanying high speed RIB. This is usually an morning excursion which is repeated after lunch, giving everyone as much time in the water as possible – a truly inspiring and unique marine encounter.

During the week, the boat will moor in a protected bay where a night snorkel with the rays is possible.

  5. Day 10: Disembark & begin your journey home

Disembark your liveaboard this morning and transfer to the airport for your return overnight flight back to the UK.

  6. Day 11: Arrive UK

Please note: This adventure is primarily a snorkelling and freediving experience.
