Micronesia
Micronesia is not easy to get to from the UK, it is best to call us to discuss the options.
With more ocean than land, some of Micronesia's best sights are underwater. There are more than 2000 islands spread over 5 million kilometres of the Pacific, but many world maps don't even bother showing them. Micronesia is not a single country. It is a loose collection of different countries, united in their history of having been the U.S. Trust Territory of Micronesia.
Guam, is the hub for a visit to Micronesia. It is at the Agana Airport where all the international planes land from the US, Japan, Indonesia and Australia. From Agana, Continental Airlines flies to the other islands of Micronesia such as Truk, Pohnpei, Kosrae and Majuro, Saipan and Rota, and to Yap and Palau. But Guam has a lot more to offer than just an airport and hotels. It has some pretty good diving too. Guam's lush underwater playgrounds sits within 80 kilometres of the ocean's deepest point: the Marianas Trench, some 13,000 metres below sea level. The diving around the island is very varied and with 75 dive sites you are sure to find one that you like. You can find nice coral gardens with hard and soft corals, vertical drop-offs, WWII shipwrecks, seaplanes, caves and tunnels. We can offer accommodation at either the Santa Fe on the Bay Hotel and Beach Resort a small boutique style hotel, located in Agana Bay. There is a pool and open-air beach bar and grill. Alternatively there is the 600 room Outrigger Guam Resort that is located downtown on Tumon Bay. Diving is provided by Guam Professional Sport Divers who will collect you from the resorts and offer both wreck and reef diving. Do ask us for more details.
Palau Just under 2 hours south west from Guam, are the unique rock islands of Palau, spread out over a lagoon more than 37 kilometres long, the islands are covered with thick jungle growth and are rarely visited by people. It is famous for its Rock Islands and jelly fish lakes. These scenic islands have some of Micronesia's finest snorkelling and diving. Palau has three ocean currents converging in its waters which bring in some of the most varied and dazzling marine life in the world. Every imaginable species of coral and over 1500 species of fish inhabit the rich reefs around Palau with sharks and barracudas a common sight. Most dives are drift dives. The best season for diving here is from January to June when visibility can be over 60 metres. More than 48 Japanese wrecks were sunk in Palau during air raids in 1944. Numerous American and Japanese planes joined them. These wrecks are scattered all over Palau although most of the ships were sunk near the Rock Islands. Many are still to be discovered and some are in depths not suitable for the sport diver. Palau offers both liveaboards and resort diving.
Yap, with its giant stone money, grass skirts, and traditional men's houses, offers an insight into interesting Micronesia history and culture. The most intriguing island in Micronesia. A land steeped in ancient traditions, fascinating legends, and peopled by one of the most distinctive cultures in the Pacific. From dropoffs, gentle slopes and channel drifts to the protected confines of the harbour, Yap offers a whole range of diving. Most dive sites in Yap are less than 30 minutes from Colonia Harbour. It is almost completely encircled by a fringing reef providing a backdrop for some of the most colourful and diverse marine and coral life to be found in Micronesia. Yap is the world's foremost destination for seeing Manta Rays up close and personal. There is no other place on earth where they can be seen on such a consistent basis year round. This fact has catapulted Yap to the top on all lists of the finest diving attractions in the world. Yap is also excellent for snorkellers, the reefs starting close to the surface.
Truk Lagoon The correct original name for Truk is Chuuk Estate, it is best known to worldwide divers as Truk Lagoon. Truk is where an entire Japanese fleet, frozen in time, sank in February 1944. Complete with sake cups and skeletons, jeeps and tanks tied on board and fighter planes still waiting in the holds; the wrecks have been declared an underwater museum. Incredible corals in a kaleidoscope of colours and shapes attract divers worldwide for both daytime and night diving. Schooling tropical fish smother the ships. Nowhere else in the world are there so many wrecks in close proximity, situated in shallow clear water. Many of the wrecks are visible while snorkelling and there are many on-shore wartime locations to visit.
Bikini Atoll Bikini Atoll is the ultimate destination for wreck diving. After decades of being off-limits to all but a few research expeditions, it is now possible for the adventure diver to experience the diving of a lifetime. Bikini Atoll is the final resting place of some of the most significant warships in history. The US aircraft carrier Saratoga is a must, being the only carrier in the world that is diveable. There is also HIJMS Nagato the flagship of the Japanese Navy, along with other ships such as the battleship Arkansas and the submarine Apagon. Unlike Truk where the main ships are freighters, this is a fleet of fighting vessels that were armed and ready for action when they were sunk in 1946. None of the wrecks have been salvaged and they lie as they sank. The area has been untouched for 40 years and has very prolific sea life including sharks, tuna, marlin, turtles and much more.
