Montserrat
In the 1990's this 39-square mile British territory was severely affected by a series of volcanic eruptions and everyone thought the worst for the health of the marine environment. In fact, the opposite happened, the ash soon washed away leaving huge rocky boulders providing substrates for reefs. An exclusion zone was imposed for many years, and with no human intervention the ecosystem has thrived and is now healthier than ever. The island offers excellent diving and snorkelling, with 30 sites in crystal clear waters. Explore untouched reefs, volcanic caverns and a myriad of ocean life just minutes from stunning beaches on a shore dive or head out on a boat dive and experience the wonder of the ocean around the nearby island of Redonda. On visiting Montserrat you will be rewarded with a unique experience. You can spend a day on a beach, almost by yourself and swim in the crystal clear waters of the Caribbean Sea. No speed boats, no jet skis will disturb you. Alternatively explore the tropical rain forests or spend the day watching the volcano. Take a trip to Garibaldi Hill from where you can look down to Plymouth, the old capital, which had the bad fortune to be in the way of the major lava flows.
