With few resorts, a liveaboard may represent the best way to visit the pristine and unexplored atolls of the southern Maldives.
Diving itineraries generally focus on Meemu, Thaa and Laamu atolls where there are plenty of dives sites are still waiting to be discovered. Adventures even further south, where Maldives meets the equator, are increasing in popularity and promise superb diving and conditions throughout the year.
The southern Maldives is known for exceptional drift diving, superb visibility, unspoilt corals and some of the best big fish encounters in the Maldives. Expect thrilling channel dives, mantas and eagle rays, Napoleon wrasse, abundant reef fish and whale sharks.
Many liveaboards include the deep south at the beginning of the year for the best opportunity of shark encounters, however the diving remains outstanding throughout the year. Huvadhoo Atoll is gaining reputation as the Maldives' premier shark diving location. Expect grey reef sharks, white-tip, hammerhead and silky sharks as well as other large pelagic species in this remote area. In addition there's the opportunity to dive Tiger Zoo at Fuvamulah, a dive site where pregnant female tiger sharks are seen in large numbers.
