Divers heading straight for Komodo, Lembeh Strait or Raja Ampat often overlook Bali as a dive destination, yet Bali has many diverse dive sites, and trips offering exceptional diving for all levels.
Bali has a little of everything: enjoy protected, shallow bays and reefs populated by exotic critters; exciting drift diving with pelagics; or wreck diving in Tulamben, where reef fish swarm the USS Liberty wreck, and coral growth is lush.
For the less experienced, the Coral Reef Project and Menjangan Island are great dive spots located in the quiet northwest corner of the island. Diving on the east coast includes sites such as a Gili Tekepong and Mimpang, two steep sided islands renonwed for great corals, large schools of feeding fish and frequent sightings of white-tip reef sharks, all accessed from Padang Bai when staying in Candidasa.
Just off the east coast, Nusa Lembongan is the island to visit from Jun-Oct, when the mola mola, the heaviest fish in our oceans, rise from the depths to be cleaned. This is an incredible encounter for more experienced divers whereas divers of all abilities have access to a dive site where manta rays can be observed throughout the year, Apr-May being the optimum months for encounters with these magnificent creatures.
