The Zanzibar Archipelago lies in the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean, its coastal breeze scented with cloves, nutmeg, and cinnamon. The island’s pristine beaches, flourishing coral reefs, and rich cultural heritage have captivated travellers for centuries.

Embark on a scuba diving adventure to Zanzibar, famously known as the "Spice Island", where rich history, diverse cultures, and a thriving underwater world create the perfect destination for your next diving holiday. Once a bustling hub of trade, Zanzibar is now a paradise for scuba divers, offering some of the best dive sites in East Africa. Here, crystal-clear waters deliver great visibility—ranging from 20 to 30+ metres—and year-round water temperatures averaging 27°C, making it an ideal place for diving. Experience a dazzling mix of reef, wreck, and pelagic dives tailored for both beginners and experienced, advanced divers.

Scuba diving Zanzibar brings you face-to-face with a staggering abundance of marine life. Over 500 species of reef fish inhabit these waters alongside turtles, manta rays, dolphins, and seasonally migrating humpback whales and whale sharks. Zanzibar’s waters are also magical for underwater photographers and marine life enthusiasts. Around sites like Mnemba Atoll and Tumbatu Island, discover everything from colourful reef fish and Napoleon wrasse to rare creatures such as Spanish dancers, leaf fish, mantis shrimp, porcelain crabs, and a variety of colourful sea slugs. Local guides can help you find the best scuba diving spots, whether you’re seeking wall dives for advanced divers, shallow coral reefs for beginners, or macro critters for your camera lens.

Suggested Itinerary

  1. Day 1: Departure from the UK

Your diving adventure begins as you depart the UK for the island of Zanzibar. Flights are via major international hubs or with an overnight stay in Dar es Salaam.

  2. Day 2: Welcome to Zanzibar – The Spice Island

Touch down on this iconic island and travel to the northern tip, where the beautiful beaches of Nungwi and Matemwe await. Choose one of the excellent accommodation options available - a boutique hotel or beachfront lodge is ideal for divers seeking easy access to the best dive sites and stunning Indian Ocean views.

Settle in, take a stroll along the warm sands, and toast your arrival with a refreshing welcome cocktail as you look forward to your exclusive underwater experience.

  3. Days 3-7 : Diving Holiday on Zanzibar Island

Scuba diving in Zanzibar begins today. Each morning, meet at the dive centre to prepare for two thrilling boat dives, often exploring hotspots like the world-renowned Mnemba Atoll—a protected marine reserve prised for its steep walls, outer reefs, and flourishing coral gardens. With luck, you’ll spot reef sharks in the blue, drift among clouds of tropical fish, and glide alongside playful dolphins and graceful turtles.

For those keen on other dive locations - Nungwi Village, Tumbatu Island and Leven Bank promise adventure, incredible biodiversity, and excellent visibility. Look out for big game fish out in the blue, like giant groupers, barracuda, wahoo or even sailfish.

On the West Coast, for those staying near Stone Town, wreck divers will discover historic wrecks/reefs around Pange Sandbank and Bawe Island. Wrecks such as the Great Northern and Royal Navy Lighter have become homes for marine life, flourishing with coral.

Afternoon and night dives can be booked locally - a very popular option if you want to see the reef come alive after dark. Non-divers can opt for snorkelling trips to marine conservation areas, dhow sailing, or exploring the outer reefs of Zanzibar.

  4. Day 8: Day at Leisure and Sightseeing in Zanzibar

After your final day of diving, relax on your local beach or experience more of what Zanzibar has to offer. Adventurers can try sailing, kiteboarding, paddle boarding, or kayaking, while nature enthusiasts can embark on dolphin-watching tours or visit green turtle nesting sites.

Take a trip to the historic Stone Town, see Aldabra giant tortoises found on Prison Island (Changuu Island), or join a spice farm tour for a sensory journey through Zanzibar’s famed plantations. For the eco-conscious, explore coral reef conservation projects or Jozani Forest’s rare red colobus monkeys.

  5. Day 9: Farewell to Zanzibar, or extend your stay

Enjoy your last morning in Zanzibar with a leisurely breakfast overlooking the ocean, then stroll along the shores of Zanzibar’s north or east coast before heading to the airport.

Ready for more? Extend your holiday with a visit to Pemba Island, Mafia Island, or combine your dive trip with a Tanzanian safari in Saadani National Park or Selous Game Reserve. For further guidance on extensions, contact our team.

  6. Day 10: Arrival Back in the UK

Return home with vivid memories of the spectacular reefs and incredible marine life you encountered on your Zanzibar diving holiday.
