Diving Rainbow Reef, Taveuni island

The Rainbow Reef is situated in the Somosomo Strait between the Fiji Islands of Taveuni and Vanua Levu. The current and tidal changes push nutrient-rich water through the channel, allowing the hard and soft corals, and marine life, to thrive. There are fewer places in the world that have such healthy coral coverage. The marine biodiversity is rich with giant clams, long nose butterflyfish, blue girdled angelfish, groupers, tuna, barracuda, and the occasional banded sea krait. Shark life is also abundant with the possibility of sighting whitetip reef sharks, tawny nurse sharks, leopard sharks, blacktip and grey reef sharks.

Top Dive Sites in Taveuni Island

Spectacular soft corals abound in the world-famous sites such as Great White Wall, which is one of many dive sites on the Rainbow Reef in the Somosomo Strait. The dramatic wall is covered with the white coral Dendronephthya (tree coral), the conditions of this dive site allow the soft coral growth to explode. The sister dive site Purple Wall is another display of floral beauty. Covered with purple soft corals, several whip corals and a few large gorgonians for good measure, this exhilarating drift dive brings a chance to see manta rays and grey reef sharks too. The Cabbage Patch is a gentle sloping reef engulfed in serpentine salad hard coral heads while bicolour fang blenny and Christmas tree worms poking out. In the sandy areas watch for pairs of fire dartfish, shrimp partners and gobies standing guard, alongside sea cucumbers and blue spotted rays. Rainbow's End is a wonderful all-rounder as a gentle drift dive, the slope is abundant with table corals and boulder corals, blue streak and blue and yellow fusiliers flow over the reef while blue ribbon eels and garden eels pop out of the ocean floor.

Fiji Island Hopping including Taveuni Island

Taveuni island is reached by domestic flight from either Nadi or Suva Airport on the main island of Viti Levu. This makes a straightforward pairing with Beqa Lagoon and Pacific Harbour or Bligh Water and Rakiraki which are situated on the main island. Beqa Lagoon is famous for its tiger shark diving, and Bligh Water's corals are only rivalled by Taveuni itself.

The islands of Kadavu and Vanua Levu are accessed by another domestic flight from Nadi. Vanua Levu the closest island to Taveuni geographically, shares several scuba diving areas and is a hot spot for hammerhead diving, but transferring between the two isn't as easy as it may seem. Kadavu is tranquil and untouched and well worth the journey for those willing to make it with the Great Astrolabe Reef and year round manta ray sightings.
