A trip to Rakiraki involves a scenic 2-hour drive along the Sun Coast of northern Viti Levu, Fiji's largest island. Taking in the glorious sights through some of Fiji’s least publicised, yet most beautiful terrain. Sugar cane is grown in the valleys, cattle are raised in the highlands, whilst root crops, including yaqona (kava) are also cultivated here. Rakiraki is an area often said to portray Fijian patriotism. Many noted Fijian politicians have originated from here.
Top Dive Sites in Rakiraki
On the edge of Bligh Water, from Rakiraki a number of Fiji’s best dive sites can be accessed. Black Magic Mount boasts an incredible diversity of marine life, featuring large schools of big-eyed jacks, and the potential to spot manta rays and various shark species, all amidst vibrant coral formations. Mount Munity and E6 are pinnacles covered in soft corals of every colour you can image, pelagic fish visiting include schooling barracuda and jacks. Neptune's Rhapsody is a collection of coral bommies hiding swim throughs and white tip reef sharks. Each bommie is covered in soft corals and sea fans, while anthias and nudibranchs add to the eclectic colour pallet. Volivoli’s three house reefs are wonderful macro spotting areas, and the wrecks of the MV Ovalau II and Papuan Explorer mean there really is something in Rakiraki for every diver.
Fiji Island Hopping including Bligh Water
Rakiraki is an excellence inclusion on any Fijian island hopping itinerary. On the southern edge of Viti Levu island is Beqa Lagoon and Pacific Harbour, renowned as the home of Fiji’s shark diving due to the abundance of bull sharks. A short ferry ride away from Rakiraki, are the Yasawa and Mamanuca Islands. This is the sunniest part of Fiji, offering shark encounters, turtle sightings, and wonderful beaches.
Kadavu Island lies to the south of Viti Levu, accessible via domestic flight, and is home to the Great Astrolabe Reef, one of the world’s largest barrier reefs, complete with manta ray cleaning stations. To the east, also reachable by domestic flight is Vanua Levu, providing access to the Natewa Bay and the Kor Sea, the latter a prime location in Fiji for spotting hammerheads. Taveuni is a must pairing for those who cannot get enough of soft corals, with the spectacular Rainbow Reef in the Somosomo Strait.
