Madeira island is home to incredible vistas, a charming culture with a rich history as well plenty of underwater experiences including the Garajau Marine Park. The temperate climate attracts visitors throughout the year.

Located off the northwest coast of Africa, Porto Santo island was discovered by chance (due to a storm) in 1418 followed by a year later, the neighbouring island of Madeira so named for its abundance of wood. Early inhabitants arrived in Funchal from the Algarve, but it was those from northern Portugal who settled and shaped the agriculture of the island. The wood was cleared for cereal crops, which was replaced by sugar cane, followed by the grape vines and today, tourism is the main economy of the island. Madeira and Porto Santo are the only two inhabited islands of the small archipelago. The other islands are nature reserves, predominantly occupied by nesting seabirds such as petrel and shearwater species.

Madeira is a rugged volcanic island with high cliffs and waterfalls. Enjoy spectacular vistas from the Paul de Serra plateau where Pico Ruivo rises to 1,862 metres. Much of the population live on the south coast where the capital, Funchal, is located. From here it is possible to participate in all kinds of activities. The island has plenty of panoramic viewpoints, enchanting hikes amongst the indigenous Laurissilva Forest (a UNESCO World Heritage site) and walks beside the ‘levadas’ - a series of irrigation canals. There is a unique history and plenty of celebration from flower festivals to spectacular firework displays throughout the year. Relax on golden beaches, play a round of golf, get active on mountain bike trails and enjoy the amazing local delicacies. Holiday adventures await.

The underwater highlights are plenty. Divers can explore the established sites and scuttled wrecks off the south coast. Look out for seahorse, lobster and frogfish, drift along black coral encrusted walls and encounter friendly grouper and plenty of rays in the Cap Garajau Marine Park where it is also great to snorkel or learn to dive. Topside, there are regular trips to observe several species of dolphin and whale as well the colony of monk seals at the Desertas Islands.

Fly to Madeira’s capital Funchal from several regional airports in the UK. The lifestyle here is as active as you want it to be, and it is not only the locals that are warm and welcoming. With average land and sea temperatures ranging from 17 – 25°C in winter and summer, the temperate climate is a great reason to visit.
