Explore Oman’s highlights on this varied itinerary, journeying from the majestic Muscat Grand Mosque to starlit desert camping, and from the lofty green mountains to the Gulf of Oman.

The Oman Highlights itinerary gives you the best of both worlds, allowing you to take in the wonderful culture and history of this country and experience some of the best diving in Oman.

You begin topside with a guided tour of Muscat, where you visit the Grand Mosque, explore the narrow Souq alleys and discover the Bait Al Baranda Museum. You also learn about perfume production en route to Nizwa and visit the UNESCO Bahla Fort, dating back to the 12th century. During your time in Nizwa there's an opportunity to explore authentic souqs near your accommodation.

The following day, enjoy the cooling effects of the Wadi Bani Khalid, an oasis with emerald pools perfect for a refreshing dip. Continue to Jebel Akhdar, part of the Hajar Mountains, and watch the landscape change as you ascend high up the rugged landscape. End the day with a sunset over the desert and a night at a secluded desert camp, enjoying an authentic Bedouin-style dinner under the stars.

You end your holiday diving the Gulf of Oman, which can be conducted from a number of resorts around Sifah and Muscat. This itinerary is based on Sifawy Boutique Hotel. Spend the next few days diving along the stunning coastline, enjoying two dives each day.

Suggested Itinerary

  1. Day 1: Depart UK for Muscat

On arrival you’re transferred to your accommodation. The evening is yours to get to know the city.
  2. Day 2: Explore Muscat

Start your tour in the capital of Oman, Muscat. Visiting the Grand Mosque is the first stop, followed by the Royal Opera House, and time to explore the Bait Al Baranda Museum where the history of Muscat and Oman is to be discovered. The corniche takes you to the Matrah Souq; the oldest market in Muscat, the souk bustles with life and offers a variety of spices, jewellery, textiles, and souvenirs. The final destination of your guided tour provides another view into Muscat’s rich history with a photo opportunity at the Al Alam Palace, which is flanked by Al Mirani and Al Jalali, two Portuguese Forts.

The afternoon allows you to explore at your own pace.

  3. Day 3: Discover Nizwa

In the morning, you leave the modern capital and head to its predecessor, Nizwa.

On your way, you stop at the renowned Amouage factory to learn about the production of unique perfumes. Discover Nizwa’s rich and powerful history during a stop in Jabreen at the UNESCO World Heritage Bahla Fort. Dating back to the 12th century, it's believed to have been constructed by the Banu Nebhan tribe, who were known for controlling the frankincense trade.

You may also want to visit Nizwa’s authentic souqs, which are within walking distance of your accommodation in the city centre.

  4. Day 4: Traverse Jabel Akhdar and splash in Wadi Bani Khalid

Your next stop is the green mountain of Jebel Akhdar. Part of the Hajar Mountains, this provides a dramatic contrast to your previous stops. Watch the landscape change from rugged moonscape to a labyrinth of wadis and grassland. Make a refreshing stop at the Wadi Bani Khalidis en-route. A true oasis, the emerald pool entices visitors to take a dip to escape the desert heat.

End your day watching the sun set over the desert atop of a dune before spending the night at a secluded desert camp. An authentic boudin style dinner is served among guests, and you can stargaze like never before, far away from city lights!

  5. Day 5: Soak Up Sur

Once the most important city in the Arabian Sea, the coastal town of Sur is now a great deal more tranquil while retaining its ancient beauty. The dhow factory and museum provides a glimpse into the historic techniques that are still used today.

On your way to your diving accommodation, there's an opportunity to explore Wadi Shab or Wadi Tiwi before arriving at Sifawy Boutique Hotel or one of the other resorts in Muscat

  6. Days 6-9 : Dive the Gulf of Oman

Relax and dive Muscat and its stunning coastline. With two dives each day, you have the opportunity to explore the best dive sites of this area. Experience soft corals, turtles, and leopard sharks in the Bandar Al Khairan area, schools of barracuda at Fahal Island, and the wreck of Al Munassir. Dolphins are often spotted while on the day boat, and there are seasonal opportunities to see mobula rays and whale sharks.
  7. Day 10: Day at leisure

Lap up the last of the Middle Eastern sun on your final day of your Oman Highlights itinerary, relishing the memories made and destinations discovered.
  8. Day 11: Return to the UK
