The island of São Miguel is the largest and most populated with most living in the capital, Ponta Delgada. The ‘Green Island’ is a land of lakes nested in volcanic craters, the most spectacular being the twin lakes of Sete Cidades filled with legends and myths. Here you can canoe in the craters or relax in the natural hot water pools, another attraction of the island.
Marine life is abundant in the subtropical waters attracting colourful damsels and wrasse, rays, barracuda and other larger pelagic species. The volcanic topography creates diving adventures under arches, in caves, along rocky reefs and gulleys. The dive centre is open May-Oct during the warmer months where sea temperatures range from 17–24C and visibility is 30 metres on average. Photographers will enjoy capturing the spectacular scenery as much as the wildlife.
