The island of São Miguel is the largest and most populated in the Azores, with most living in the capital, Ponta Delgada. The dive sites offer adventure for both those looking to learn and for experienced divers.
The ‘Green Island’ is a land of volcanic crater lakes, the most spectacular being the twin lakes of Sete Cidades, steeped in myth and legend. Here you can canoe in the craters or relax in the natural hot water pools, another attraction of the island. The fertile soils have contributed to the economic growth of the islands over time. Here you can eat tropical fruits and enjoy a local brew of Azorean tea.
Visibility is 30 metres on average and the most comfortable diving season is May-Oct. The variety of shallow rocky reefs, arches, underwater caves, wrecks and deeper oceanic dives offer an abundance of rich marine life in the subtropical waters fed by the Gulf Stream. Photographers will enjoy capturing the spectacular scenery as much as the wildlife.
