Why Dive in South Africa
Find out why Travel Consultant Mat Howell thinks you should have South Africa on your diving destination list this year…
South Africa represents the ideal destination for the adventurous diver looking for thrills both above and beneath the waves.
Our Shark Week itineraries are perfect for encounters with bull, black tip, tiger and ragged tooth sharks; all regularly seen at Aliwal Shoal. It’s a great trip for shark enthusiasts, especially travelling as a group. Based in Umkomaas, divers head out each morning to the dive sites along the Shoal for incredible shark encounters. Spend time with the ‘raggies’ as they begin to congregate en-masse in May and stick around until November, or gaze in awe at tiger and hammerheads. It’s a spectacular location for an array of shark sightings.
Just weeks ago there were hundreds, perhaps even thousands of hammerheads sighted at Protea Banks. Protea offers exciting drift dives for adventurous thrill seekers, and is arguably one of the best shark diving sites in the world.
The rugged Wild Coast sets the stage for one of the most spectacular wildlife events on earth; the Sardine Run!
Dolphins force the sardines into ever tighter bait-balls, gannets dive-bomb and pierce the water from above to reach their prey, sharks attack from every angle and enormous humpback and brydes whales devour the sardines in their thousands with every mouthful.
Table Mountain provides the backdrop for where the Atlantic and Indian oceans meet and it is from here that our Cape Town Extravaganza begins. Your week of action packed excursions can include kelp diving with seven-gill cow sharks, cage diving with great whites, a visit to boulders beach to see the penguins and of course game drives to the world famous Kruger National Park for the chance to see lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, giraffe and more.
