Tanzania Above The Water
Although Tanzania is a safari destination without equal, containing many world-class national parks and game reserves, there is much more. Relax on tropical beaches, climb the snowcapped peak of Mt Kilimanjaro or just admire Lake Victoria and Lake Tanganyika. Tanzania is a winning combination. You can fly straight from a safari camp in the morning and reach the shores of the Indian Ocean in time for an afternoon dip. A perfect destination for a romantic honeymoon, an adventure holiday or just to dive or relax.
Selous Game Reserve
The game reserves in southern Tanzania are immense and remote with few settlements. Offering some of Africa’s finest virgin bush, unchanged through centuries, and rivers, swamps, woodlands and savannah inhabited by well over a million wild animals, being traversed by the world’s greatest remaining herds of buffalo, elephant, hippo and Sable antelope. The Selous Game Reserve, founded in 1905, is the largest protected wilderness reserve on the continent, one of only three World Heritage Sites in Tanzania. The area is home to hippo, crocodile, elephant, buffalo, wildebeest, zebra, giraffe, baboon, leopard, lion, rhino, eland, sable and roan, to mention just a few of the species. Whether it is by boat, viewing game in and around the river, in 4-wheel drive open-sided vehicles, or walking through the bush along elephant trails, a visit to the Selous brings one as close to the natural world as possible.
Rufiji River Camp
Rufiji River Camp is located in one of the most photogenic and wildlife-rich areas of the Selous Game Reserve. Rufiji River Camp is a tented camp situated in the northeastern part of the Selous on a high bank, overlooking the mighty Rufiji River and the plain beyond. The camp accommodates guests in twenty very comfortable tents, each with twin-beds, mosquito nets, fully equipped private bathroom and verandah offering magnificent views.
Selous Safari Camp
On the banks of Lake Tagalala, Selous Safari Camp occupies a prime position at the centre of a unique riverine and lake complexclose to the Rufiji River. Each of the twelve safari tents is on its own raised timber platform offering great views of the lake. The camp has a swimming pool, togther with dining, bar and lounge areas. Explore from here on foot, by boat and in 4-wheel drives.
Saadani National Park
Saadani is East Africa’s only National Park with ocean frontage, and, therefore, the only location which genuinely offers beautiful beaches and safari in a single location. Geographically the closest National Park to Dar es Salaam, Saadani is the only place one can see wildlife and bird life interacting on the coast. There are at least 24 species of large mammals found here including the only permanent elephant population in the area. The beach areas are breeding grounds for the green turtle. The sheer variety of game and scenery is a highlight in itself.
Saadani Safari Lodge
Avoid the crowds and drive or fly to this undiscovered ocean front national park. A ‘tent with a view’ offers a peaceful retreat from which to explore Tanzania’s only coastal wildlife reserve. The eight en-suite, bandas are elegantly perched on stilts and individually spaced out along the pristine Indian Ocean beach. All offer total privacy with hammocks on large balconies overlooking the sea.
Mafia Island
Within East Africa’s largest protected area, Mafia Island Marine Park, Chole Bay’s clear waters offer wonderful snorkelling, sailing and swimming. Outside the bay are some of the richest reefs in the world, with unparalleled variety of hard and soft corals and diverse tropical fish.
With over 400 marine species identified, this is the meeting place for large oceanic fish, as well as those common to coral reefs in the Indian Ocean. Almost all of Mafia’s best diving is at less than 30 metres, with an unparalleled variety of hard and soft corals and fabulous shallow reefs, bommies, channels, walls and caves, drift and night dives. Among the grasses of the Majira Channel, you may find the amazing mermaid-like dugong. Giant sea turtles lay eggs on the beaches of small islands to the east of Mafia, while the fascinating giant Madagascan fruit bat remains an alluring and unusual visitor’s attraction.
