PADI Women’s Dive Day: Meet Sarah Wight

To mark Women’s Dive Day 2018 we are celebrating our resident woman diver - Product Manager Sarah Wight - in the hope of inspiring more women to start diving.

How did you get into diving?

For as long as I can remember I’ve always been a keen swimmer and snorkeller. At 16, my dad decided it was time to get me trained up so that he would have a buddy to go diving with. What a birthday present that was, especially as I was lucky enough to learn in Indonesia!

What was the most exciting dive you’ve done?

No one dive is ever the same, and there are plenty of memorable ones to date. If I had to say, my top experiences would probably include spotting a turtle cruising in the opposite direction to us on a drift dive in the Bahamas, being mesmerised by a baitball of sardines in the Philippines, the experience of freshwater cave diving in Mexico and most recently watching in amazement as a group of manta rays circled around their cleaning station in Indonesia.

What do you love most about the ocean?

I love the intrigue, expanse and magnificent biodiversity of life in the ocean. One of my favourite places to be is underwater, away from everyday life, watching everything go about its business around me.

What would you say to women who are thinking about learning to dive?

“Take the plunge and just keep breathing!”

The underwater world is special and unique. It is a world full of surprises and amazing adventures.

Diving is also a great way to relax and take a step back from the daily grind, to meet new buddies and open your eyes to a new world.

It offers the opportunity of self development to people of all abilities. You will continually learn new skills, perhaps get involved in conservation projects, possibly change career and once you’ve discovered and explored them, forever be a guardian of the reefs.

Search for your local club and sign up for a ‘try-dive’, it’s a great way to give diving a go.
