Diving in the Galapagos Islands - a Trip of a Lifetime

Sofía Green Iturralde from the Galapagos Whale Shark Research Project describes our bucket list trip to the Galapagos Islands - the ultimate trip for whale shark enthusiasts!

A day diving in the Galapagos Islands is a day you will never forget. Now imagine a full week of diving in the Galapagos Islands!

Imagine yourself arriving to the archipelago, getting a first impression of the uniqueness of the islands from air - seeing arid red rocky coasts, green highlands on the centre of the islands, and a beautiful turquoise ocean contrasting with land. You can already begin to imagine everything you might be able to encounter by submerging yourself in these waters.

Flying into Baltra Island, the Galapagos. Then you arrive and come onboard the M/Y Aqua, a comfortable vessel with a beautiful dive platform that will be your home for the next seven days.  Here a great team of staff members will welcome you onboard and get you settled for an experience of a lifetime.

Aqua Galapagos liveaboard. Galapagos has been a part of my life since I was young and my permanent home for the past five years and I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. Here I work as a marine biologist focused in shark conservation, specifically whale shark conservation, and spend as much of my time as possible beneath the ocean’s surface.

I invite you to come dive with me. During our trip we will navigate around the best sites of the Galapagos, experiencing all the amazing life the underwater world here has to offer. We will have a chance to experience diving in the centre islands where we will have our first shark and sea turtle encounters, find an amazing array of reef fish from warm and cold waters, search for the amazing giant oceanic manta ray and get our first taste of diving in a protected area where life flourishes.

In these extreme pelagic islands we have a chance to encounter incredible marine megafauna such as the largest fish in the ocean: the whale shark, alongside hundreds of hammerhead, silky, Galapagos, and oceanic blacktip sharks, dolphins, endemic sea lions, sea turtles, and beautiful schooling fish.

The wild west of Galapagos fosters the highest number of endemism where you will dive with species not seen anywhere else in the world. The star of these dives: the marine iguana - the only marine foraging reptile in existence. To dive with these animals is like stepping into the past and sharing a moment with a living dinosaur underwater! In the west we will also have a chance to see the Galapagos penguin, known for being the only penguin to be found north of the equator, the southern ocean sunfish, the Galapagos cormorant, and unique fish such as the red lipped batfish.

The Galapagos is full of surprises and you never know what else you might encounter under or above water, in day or night dives, during your trip. In these islands we have sporadic encounters with varied whale species, tiger sharks, and so much more.

Throughout the trip you will have the guidance of two professional dive guides, plus myself both below and above water. In the evenings we will share our knowledge of the Galapagos and I will share my passion for the conservation of our planet with you through informative talks and chats in the evenings - for a taste of what to expect, watch our insightful presentation below.
