Set in the coastal town of Shelly Beach on KwaZulu-Natal's South Coast, The Lookout is a boutique, owner-run guesthouse designed from the ground up with divers in mind.

Founded in 2025 by diving enthusiasts Nina and Daniel Link, the property offers eight individually styled, en suite, air-conditioned rooms, each thoughtfully furnished with quality linens, natural light and ocean-inspired décor. Room configurations range from compact doubles to more spacious sea-view and pool-access rooms, with ground-floor options that can be easily combined for small families or groups.

The lodge caters seamlessly to the rhythms of a typical diving day: early breakfasts are available to match morning boat departures, whilst dedicated gear rinse stations and secure equipment storage ensure divers are always well catered for. An on-site heated pool supports training requirements or can simply be enjoyed for a refreshing dip, while communal facilities include a common room, braai area, fire pit and laundry service.

The property operates on solar power and follows low-waste, plastic-conscious principles throughout, reflecting a genuine commitment to protecting the coastline it overlooks.

Directly partnered with South Coast Diving, The Lookout Guesthouse provides an ideal base for exploring Protea Banks.

South Coast Diving

South Coast Diving Company operates from Shelly Beach, KwaZulu-Natal, offering access to Protea Banks, one of South Africa's most sought-after shark diving destinations.

With 25 years of experience diving these waters, the team brings exceptional local knowledge to every dive, alongside serious safety protocols including GPS diver tracking and a dedicated dive rescue team.

Located a short walk from The Lookout Guesthouse, the dive centre is the only PADI Instructor Development Centre in the Shelly Beach area, and is led by one of the world's few female PADI Course Directors. Daily diving is operated from RIBs launched from the beach, with two dives typically offered each day. Both reef dives and baited dives are available to enjoy. Safety protocols are at the forefront of every dive, and each diver is equipped with their own GPS tracking device, with training provided as standard in dive briefings. Fully serviced equipment rental is available for an additional charge.

Protea Banks is renowned for encounters with ragged-tooth sharks, scalloped hammerhead sharks, bull sharks, blacktip reef sharks and, on rarer occasions, the elusive blue shark. The centre also runs dedicated Sardine Run expeditions during the annual migration, one of the ocean's most spectacular wildlife events. Blue sharks can also be seen in this area, and the dive centre offers the opportunity for blue shark dives if they're known to be in the area at the time.

Conservation sits at the heart of the operation; every dive contributes to ongoing shark advocacy and ocean protection initiatives, supported by affiliations with Project AWARE, and a clear ethos of diving with purpose.
