The east coast town of Trincomalee has attracted seafarers from the world over since ancient times. Built around a natural deep water harbour, this is a prime location for blue whale encounters.

Commonly known as Trinco, the port is of strategic importance and has a played an important role in the country’s history. The natural harbour is guarded by two imposing headlands, the most famous being Swami Rock on which stands the Koneswaram Temple. From here it’s possible to spot cetaceans as they migrate around the coast of Sri Lanka; the coastal waters off Trinco are renowned in particular for blue whale sightings.
