The warm currents allow for a unique blend of subtropical and temperate marine life found in the Poor Knights Marine Reserve and at White Island Volcano.

Underwater highlights include the famous Rainbow Warrior wreck, controversially bombed, causing it to sink in 1985; the Poor Knights Marine Reserve, a subtropical reef system where fish abound, a year round destination; White Island Volcano, with its bubbling fissures and pinnacles and the Twin Wrecks of HMNZS Tui Waikato scuttled in 2000, lying at a depth of 30 metres, just north of Tutukaka Heads.
