Wilderness Diving Rocktail Bay

Day 1. Depart London

Richard's Bay via Johannesburg.

Days 2 to 8. Rocktail Bay Lodge [FB]

Situated within the forest canopy, just metres from the Indian Ocean, in the northern reaches of the Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park (a World Heritage Site), Rocktail Bay Lodge offers perhaps the most private beach experience in South Africa. With nearly 40 kilometres of pristine coastline one can walk for hours without meeting another soul. Accommodation is in eleven tree-house, en-suite chalets; each with a private balcony and an additional outdoor shower in the forest.

Rocktail is home to an array of fascinating wildlife, none more so than the massive Leatherback, and Loggerhead Turtles that come ashore to nest and lay their eggs each year. The height of turtle activity occurs between October and March, with hatching occurring between January and March. During these times guests can choose to participate in evening turtle drives on the beach and to assist with the on-going turtle conservation research project.

Situated offshore is the almost virgin Maputaland Marine Reserve, offering extraordinary diving and snorkelling encounters with huge shoals of fish - including Raggedtooth Sharks, and cetaceans - pristine reefs and excellent visibility. From April through October, there is a good chance of seeing the Humpback Whale migration - June, July and August being the peak months. On land you can enjoy nature walks to explore the areas unique flora and fauna or simply relax on the beach or in a hammock, with a good book.

Transfer to Richard's Bay Airport for your overnight flight.
