Wreck Extravaganza, Subic & Coron Bays

18 days London to London

Situated in the north of the Philippines' most westerly islands, the Calamian Islands, is Sangat Island Reserve. The Calamians are renowned for their white beaches, pristine beauty, natural attractions and mystic appeal, whilst Coron Bay is fast becoming one of the world's best dive destinations, due to a unique combination of fantastic wreck diving opportunities, coral reefs and the warm, geothermal lakes of Coron Island. Two large, local outriggers convey up to ten divers each to the sites, returning to shore between dives for meals and surface intervals, with regular full day excursions to sites and islands that are further afield. An intriguing insight into the WWII battle of the Sulu Sea, is afforded by the wrecks of Japanese naval support ships sunk here by US carrierbased aircraft. Lying at an average depth of 25-metres, with a maximum of 40-metres, the wrecks make excellent diving for all levels, almost all are in good condition and penetrations are possible for experienced wreck divers. Most technical facilities are available on the island, with a filling station providing 100% oxygen, and complete O2 clean tanks and equipment available for rental.

Accommodation is in ten exclusive, individual cottages, constructed in local architectural style and using local materials. All offer exquisite views over the beach and Bay of Coron and you can choose from Beachfront Cottages, where you are lulled to sleep by the sound of the sea or Cliffside Cottages, where you wake to the sounds of the island's bird life.

Johan's Beach Resort
Johan's Beach Resort offers 21 clean, quiet and comfortable air-conditioned rooms, from single to twin, family size and dormitory accommodations. Rooms are either with beach view or only a few steps away from the beach. From your terrace on the second floor you have a spectacular view across Subic Bay and the surrounding mountains. All have private bathroom, hot and cold water, personal safe and TV with DVD, cable available. WIFI connection and internet computers are available at no extra cost to guests. The rooms are recently constructed and spotlessly clean.

Not only is there a restaurant and bar, but a recently opened bakery store and ice cream parlour, the only one in Subic Bay that serves authentic Belgian breads, baked goodies, cakes and ice cream on the beach.

Johan's offers Nitrox and Trimix diving and visits 30 wrecks and 30 coral sites with their three fast speed boats leaving in front of the resort at least twice a day.

Sangat Diving Wrecks

Subic Bay
Mention Subic Bay to a diver and images of wrecks are instantly conjured up. Subic Bay is one of only two areas that have high concentration of wrecks in the Philippines, the other site is Coron Bay near Sangat Island. The majority of the wrecks are a result of either the Spanish/US war in 1898 or World War II, where a number of Japanese vessels were sunk by US aircraft. Subic Bay has the advantage that most of its wrecks are in depths easily accessible to sport divers, and most are within a 20-minute boat ride from the shore. The enclosed bay offers calm, protected waters in most weather conditions.
