Lagoon Package
18 days London to London
Tahiti and her islands are the premier underwater destination for observing anything 'big' and abundant; schools of several hundred Jack fish or Barracuda are not unusual, and the 'Lagoon Package,' covering the islands of Bora Bora, Tikehau, Rangiroa and Fakarava, offers a variety of diving experiences. The volcanic island of Bora Bora is surrounded by a lagoon that harbours an extraordinary variety of fauna whilst Tikehau, a beautiful circular atoll, is a ring of sand and coconut palms surrounding a lagoon 26-kilometres wide populated by an exceptional variety and number of fish, possibly the largest concentration in Tahiti. Rangiroa has exciting drift diving and Fakarava is the best place to see Tiger Sharks and, between July and September, it is possible to snorkel with Lemon Head Whales. Below is an outline of the itinerary you can expect, although the exact diving sites will depend on weather and water conditions.
- Day 1. Papeete to Bora Bora
- From Papeete International Airport you will take a domestic flight to spend three nights on Bora Bora, spotting Manta Rays in the famous lagoon.
- Days 2 & 3. Bora Bora [B]
- Included each day is a 2-tank dive to a local site such as the 'Giant Manta Rays' Dive Dance? or 'The White Valley,' which teem with Grey Sharks and Barracudas.
- Days 4 to 6. Bora Bora to Tikehau [B]
- Time to leave Bora Bora and spend three nights on the unspoilt atoll of Tikehau, famous for its enormous fish population. Dive 'Shark Hole' to see Grey Sharks, Giant Wrasse and tunas. An all day trip is also included, with a barbecue lunch on a deserted islet.
- Days 7 to 9. Fly Tikehau to Rangiroa [B]
- Rangiroa's lagoon, maximum depth 28 metres, is so large that it's impossible to see from one side to the other. Two passes open on to the ocean, the twice-daily tide surges offering great drift diving, known as 'shooting the pass'. On days eight and nine there is an opportunity for 2-tank dives at the passes, or at local sites such as 'The Aquarium,' where huge numbers of fish congregate, or 'The Shark Hole,' home to Giant Wrasse, tunas and Grey Sharks.
- Days 10 & 11. Rangiroa to Fakarava [FB]
- Four nights at Fakarava, exploring the expansive lagoon and spectacular passes, home to Silky, and Lemon Sharks and several varieties of ray.
- Days 12 & 13. Fakarava [B, D (Day 12), FB (Day 13)]
- Two full day excursions include a 1.5 hour boat trip to the Tumakohua South Pass (known as the Rose Garden due to magnificent limestone roses) where during two drift dives, you will most likely see sharks, pelagics and turtles. The other excursion is to the wild atoll of Toau; with a barbecue lunch on a deserted islet and 2-tank dives in the Otugi and Fakatahuna Passes where you will find Tiger Sharks.
- Day 14. Fakarava to Tahiti [B]
- Head back to the main island of Tahiti for an overnight stay and maybe some souvenir shopping, before continuing your onward journey.
- Day 15. Homeward [B]
- Transfer to the airport for your next destination.
