This superb track retains a sense of wilderness and offers a different perspective on Kilimanjaro by approaching it from the north. Experienced guides consider this route one of the most beautiful. It is one of the easier routes passing through several different climatic zones. The route starts in the equatorial forest, home to the stunning Kilimanjaro Colobus monkey, with extensive views of the Kenyan plains. You soon leave the vegetation behind and reach the Mawenzi Tarn, dramatically situated in a cirque beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi. The route crosses the lunar desert of the Saddle to reach the foot of the Kibo crater wall. A final push takes you to the crater rim at Gillman's Point where you watch the sunrise. Onwards you reach Uhuru Peak passing close to the striking glaciers and ice cliffs that still occupy the summit area. With this itinerary you reach the Roof of Africa in a one week trip from the UK, and a couple more days allows you see the wildlife at Ngorongoro and the white sandy beaches of Zanzibar.
