Lamu Extension
4 days from Nairobi [FB]
- It was from the exotic island of Lamu that the very root of Swahili culture spread, centuries ago, down the East African Coast. Lamu itself has remained as it was 300 years ago; there are no cars on the island and the narrow streets of the old town are very much unchanged. The Peponi Hotel has 24 lovely rooms, decorated with interesting artwork and Swahili-style furnishings. No two rooms are alike and five of them are built right on the beach, though all have ocean views, overhead fans, mosquito netting and personal safes. Meals are extremely relaxed affairs, taken either outside under the bougainvillea trees, in the restaurant or on the terrace.
