Guatemala & Belize

14 days London to London

New for 2008 from Dive WorldwideThis makes for a wonderful combination. Guatemala is Central America in miniature and has everything from ancient Mayan ruins to tropical rainforests, colonial churches to Indian markets. Contrast this with the English speaking exuberant Caribbean - flavoured Belize, with its beaches and coral reefs. In one holiday explore the colonial city of Antigua, the forest clad Mayan ruins of Tikal, the Blue Hole of Belize plus all that both these small countries have to offer in between.
Day 1. Fly to Guatemala City arriving the same evening
It is only a short drive to the former capital Antigua at the foot of Agua Volcano. Here you will stay in a restored 17th century monastery, Casa Santo Domingo. Located in the heart of historical Antigua this enclave of understated ecclesial delight is one stay not to be missed. Offering understated luxury and comfort without compromising its original features, a stay at Casa Santa Domingo is a unique and fascinating experience.
Days 2 & 3. Discover the scenic, colonial city of Antigua [B]
The ideal way to explore the city's cobbled streets, with its pretty squares, ornate churches and colourful colonial buildings, is on foot. Intriguing alleyways and a multitude of shops, bars and cafes entice you to explore. The splendid surrounding scenery of the three towering volcanoes heightens the senses.

Extend your stay and visit the Indian markets at Chichicastenango, a three-and-a-half hour drive from Antigua. Alternatively head to Lake Atilan often quoted as being one of the most beautiful lakes in the world.

Days 4 & 5. Flores and the ancient Mayan city of Tikal [B]
A short flight from Guatemala City is the town of Flores, the springboard for exploring Tikal. La Lancha Lodge, set on the shores of beautiful Lake Peten is perfectly placed for kayaking or swimming and to visit the spectacular Mayan ruins of Tikal, deep in the Guatemalan jungle. With stunning views the 10 fan-cooled, comfortable casitas, have either a lake view or rainforest setting.
Day 6. Fly across the jungle to Belize City and connect on to Dangriga [B, D]
You are met and transferred to the Hamanasi Resort with its beach front location and PADI 5-Star Gold Palm Dive Centre. This relaxing plantation-style lodge is ideally situated for you to enjoy both the reef and the rainforest. All 13 rooms and suites have polished wood furnishings and their own verandah. Nine private tree-houses offer a little more privacy and the opportunity to view the forest canopy on its own level.
Days 7 to 12. Relax or explore the choice is yours [FB]
Hamanasi is not only a dive resort but offers a whole variety of land-based activities including trips into the surrounding coastal forest and 'Cockscomb Jaguar Reserve'. Out on the reef diving and snorkelling sites are varied and abundant.
Days 13 & 14. Fly to Belize City and continue onwards to the UK [B day 13 only]
