Experience shark diving at its finest from a liveaboard around Malpelo Island, a forbidding Pacific outpost teeming with silkys, hammerheads and more.

Lying over 300 miles off the coast of Colombia, a peak of a large submarine volcanic ridge rises from depths of 4,000 metres to reveal itself as the tiny, solitary rock of Malpelo.

The island is home to a large variety and quantity of marine life including hammerhead sharks (Jan-May), huge concentrations of eagle rays and ‘waves’ of silky sharks (May-Aug). Of particular interest to experienced divers there’s the chance to encounter the extremely rare small sand toothed sand tiger shark in deep water from Jan-Apr.

Diving in these waters can be challenging and these trips are only recommended for adventurous and experienced divers.

The itinerary below is based on a nine night trip on board the MV Yemaya, the only vessel currently permitted to operate in these waters. Nine, ten and fourteen night trips are available.

Typical itinerary

  1. Day 1: Fly to Panama

Fly to Panama City, arriving later the same day. Transfer to a local 3-star hotel for an overnight stay.
  2. Days 2-3 : Set sail for Malpelo

Due to the remote nature of this destination, there is a long and sometimes choppy crossing out to the island from Panama.
  3. Days 4-9 : Dive Malpelo, the Mount Everest of shark diving!

Immerse yourself in some of the the most enthralling shark encounters in the world, including vast schools of hammerhead and silky sharks, Galapagos sharks, eagle rays and more.

Up to three dives per day are offered, depending in weather and local sea conditions. Malpelo is a very dynamic environment and divers need to be prepared for changeable and sometimes difficult diving conditions.

  4. Day 10: Depart Malpelo and make the crossing back to Panama

  5. Day 11: Disembark and begin your journey home

  6. Day 12: Arrive UK

You should note: The above itinerary is a sample only and your actual liveaboard itinerary may vary. Marine park fees and fuel surcharges may apply. Prices based on a berth in a twin-share cabin with shared bathroom.
