Minneriya National Park

This small national park forms part of the elephant corridor in the north central plains of Sri Lanka and, with a wide range of habitat types, boasts a plethora of wildlife viewing opportunities.

  • Ideal for viewing: Asian elephant, purple-faced leaf monkey, Indian grey mongoose, Ceylon grey hornbill, rufous woodpecker
  • Excellent for: Diving & adventure


Located on the west coast, Negombo is the gateway for most Sri Lankan adventures. Historically the port attracted foreign trade whilst today the town has a thriving fishing industry and welcomes tourists to its sandy beach.

  • Ideal for viewing: sperm whale, blue whale, Bryde’s whale, bottlenose dolphin, spinner dolphin
  • Excellent for: Diving & adventure


Trincomalee, commonly known as Trinco, is built around a natural deep water harbour and has played a strategic role throughout history. Located on Sri Lanka's east coast, blue whales are seen from here in season, as they migrate around the coast.

  • Ideal for viewing: blue whale, sperm whale, Bryde’s whale, spinner dolphin, bottlenose dolphin
  • Excellent for: Diving & adventure

Wilpattu National Park

Wilpattu National Park is located on Sri Lanka's northwest coast close to the sacred city of Anuradhapura. The park features natural lakes and is home to 30 species of mammal, wetland birds and reptiles.

  • Ideal for viewing: Leopard, Sri Lankan sloth bear, spotted deer, purple heron, mugger crocodile

When to go

Sri Lanka is a year round destination but the monsoon seasons dictate the best coastal conditions. The west coast is best visited from December to March and the east from April to September.
