New Caledonia

New Caledonia offers the opportunity to dive the largest and most beautiful coral lagoon in the world. The 24,000 sq, kilometre lagoon has a 1,600 kilometre barrier reef - the 'Great Reef' - which is home to an abundance of marine life, including 2,000 varieties of fish, migrating whales (July to September), sea sponges and fluorescent corals, seas cows, star fish, numerous exotic fish and amazing crustaceans.

There are 6,500 different types of molluscs to discover, including the endemic Cyprae niger or the Lambis. On rare occasions, the fascinating living fossil Nautilus macromphalus may rise from its usual habitat at a depth of 150 to 600 metres. Water temperature ranges from 21' to 28'C, providing ideal conditions for coral, shells and fish to thrive, and protected marine reserves nurture this exceptional variety of flora & fauna, providing you with a breathtaking, and unforgettable, diving experience.

In addition to the exciting and colourful underwater life there are many wonderful dives sites, from shipwrecks acting as underwater reefs to the underwater slopes on the ocean side of the reef and the freshwater caves of the Isle of Pines. Discover treasures such as the Amedee Lighthouse Reserve, the famous Tenia Horn near Boulouparis, the Gorgonia Valley and the 'Fault' near Poe - to name just a few!

New Caledonia has many diving centres offering a wide range of courses and full equipment hire. You can choose from a range of accommodation from Melanesian 'gites' to five star hotels, close to dive centres and, when not diving, discover the marine environment with sailing trips, surfing or snorkelling, in and around the turquoise waters of the magical lagoon.
