Dive the Azores
With more than 30 years’ diving experience, this British-run dive centre offers diving to suit all qualifications and experience levels.
The diving around Pico is still relatively untouched, ensuring a diving experience that not many have had. Dive sites vary in depth from six to 50 metres and visibility varies between 15 and 30 metres. The underwater topography consists of slopes and steps creating a series of walls, caves and swim-throughs for divers to explore.
Marine life consists of crabs, lobsters and octopus with barracuda and larger rays often seen. The big attraction for many divers are the schools of mobulas at Princess Alice Bank, a submerged seamount around 50 nautical miles from Pico - starting at 35 metres and dropping down to almost 3,000 metres. The exceptional visibility means that the seamount can often be seen from the surface and experienced divers are rewarded with consistent sightings of up to 30 mobula rays in formation.
Blue shark are also encountered in the waters Pico. These elegant looking sharks can grow up to almost four metres in length and feed on smaller fish and squid. Their schooling behaviour and social structure has led to the nick-name the ‘wolves of the sea’. When the sharks are in the waters off Pico, the dive centre runs trips for more experienced divers - these are blue water dives and require excellent buoyancy and depth control.
